A traditional armchair is defined by its frame and its posture rather than its fabric: a solid wood frame with visible joinery, an upright or rolled back, and arms set at a height you can rest on. What we stock

Leather club chairs in antique buffalo, slipcovered linen in ecru, deep button-tufted wingbacks, and sled-base forms in light brown leather. Frames are solid wood with visible joinery. Buffalo leather is left uncoated so it patinates rather than peels, and on the pieces we spec it runs 2.2mm to 3.5mm thick against 1.0mm to 1.4mm for standard top-grain cowhide, which is why the nailhead trim sits flush instead of puckering.

The buying decision

Posture decides this one. A wingback holds you upright and is the right chair for reading. A club chair is low and deep and is the right chair for a fire and a drink. Then material: uncoated buffalo leather darkens and softens over years and hides wear, while linen slipcovers come off to be cleaned and are the safer answer with children or a dog. Ask about the spring deck before you spend over $2,000, because eight-way hand-tied and sinuous-spring chairs feel similar in year one and very different in year eight.

Does antique buffalo leather crack or peel?

Uncoated hides do not peel, because there is no coating to lift. They darken and soften. Condition once a year with a neutral balm and keep them out of direct sun.

A slipcovered linen chair, because the cover comes off and goes in the wash.
