A reclaimed wood console table is a long, narrow table built from salvaged timber, made to sit flat against a wall behind a sofa, down a hallway, or in an entry. Ours run 56 to 95 inches wide and only 14 to 17 inches deep, so they hold a lamp and a tray without eating the walkway. Thirty-seven in stock, $300 to $3,000, delivered in-room.

What we stock

Reclaimed pine and elm, in five base styles: ball-foot pine, X-base natural pine, painted-base Adair pieces, elm-and-iron cross bases, and casement-style media consoles with closed storage. Finishes are painted, washed or left natural. Hardware is small brass or iron, and nothing is veneered.

Depth is the number that decides most of these purchases. Every console we carry sits between 14 and 17 inches deep, which is what lets a 95-inch piece run down a hallway without turning it into a squeeze.

The buying decision

Two questions settle it. First, how much clearance does the walkway have: under 36 inches of remaining floor and you want the 14-inch depth, not the 17. Second, open or closed: an open base reads lighter and shows the floor, a casement base hides the router and the remote controls. If the console is going behind a sofa, match its height to the sofa back within an inch or two, and buy on length rather than style.

Common questions

How deep should a console table be?

Between 14 and 17 inches for a hallway or an entry, which is what ours are built to. Deeper than 18 inches and it starts to catch hips in a walkway. Behind a sofa, depth matters less than matching the sofa's back height.

What is the difference between a console table and a sofa table?

Nothing structural. "Sofa table" describes where it goes rather than what it is. The same 14-to-17-inch depth works for both.

Do your console tables have drawers?

Several do, including hand-carved reclaimed pine consoles with drawer banks. Filter by base style and look for the casement and painted-base pieces, which are the ones that carry storage.

Can a console table be used as a media console?

Yes, and the casement-style pieces are built for it. Check the interior width against your equipment before ordering, because the closed bases are divided.
