A distressed white dining table is a solid wood table finished in a hand-applied white or antique-white wash that is rubbed back at the edges, so the grain and the wear read through rather than sitting under paint. Ours run 60-inch rounds to 122-inch extending, tops 2 to 3 inches thick. Fifty-one in stock, $1,000 to $5,400.

What we stock

Round and rectangular, fixed and extending, on pedestal, trestle and four-leg ball-foot bases, in solid oak, reclaimed elm and reclaimed pine. Finishes are rustic oak, grey wash, distressed antique white and natural reclaimed pine. Tops are 2 to 3 inches thick with softened edges and visible grain.

The buying decision

Base first, because it decides who can actually sit down. A pedestal frees the corners and seats an extra person at a round table. A trestle gives clean legroom along the sides but blocks the ends. Four legs are the most stable under a leaning load and the most in the way. Then the room: a 60-inch round seats six and wants at least 11 feet in the shorter dimension, which leaves 36 inches of pull-out clearance behind each chair.

Four legs with ball feet. A trestle is close behind. A pedestal is the most likely to rock under a heavy one-sided load.
